William Haines –

---

신출의 짧은 연설의 주제는 ESGD(European Second Generation Department 유럽이세국 * 현재는 유럽교회에서 이름을 변경하라는 요구에 따라 European Second Generation Development 로 변경)와 그 지도자들이었고, 그는 그들의 이름까지 언급했습니다.

(Council of Christians and Jews)

William

<영어 원문>

Dear

I was struck by your statement that many in Europe were dissatisfied with the way we in London at least responded. They, and you, obviously dont think it was appropriate for us to do so in such a way. And yet from you and others I heard that when he went back to Korea he was told off and several times said he regretted what he had said. Now have you and these people in Korea who told him off been criticised by you and other Europeans for doing so? Such things always fascinate me. Anyway, since I am not sure you read our response here it is:

On Sunday Shinchul Moon, the oldest son of Hyo Jin from his second marriage, and thus the grandson of True Parents gave a speech at South London worship service. As he is apparently the heir to True Mother many people came to listen to him expecting and hoping to receive spiritual food and inspiration. Instead they had to listen to him using foul language including several times the F word. He also slandered the leading members of our Second-Generation community in our North of Thames region Patrick and Yebuny Hanna who he had never met, listened to or spoken to. In doing so he shocked, hurt and offended many people in the congregation which included parents, children and guests. He also defaced our image of True Parents and demeaned himself. Although claiming to want to bring unity he tried to divide our community by insisting that people should accept new doctrines if they wanted to continue to be members of it.

As the North of Thames community council, we condemn this use of language in our holy and sacred place of worship. We also reject what Shinchul said about Patrick and Yebuny Hanna who are leaders of ESGD. He has no right to publicly slander members of our community. And we whole heartedly reject his attempt to divide our community by building walls by claiming that unity is based on common belief rather than love as his grandfather taught.

I thought I was being very measured. I could have quoted what Father said about such things but didnt think it would go down too well. Or rather would cause cognitive dissonance and blow peoples mental fuses.

You have to understand how to distinguish Cain and Abel. Even among the Unification Church members, if there are two people, then among the two there is Cain and Abel. To define which one is Cain and which one is Abel, the one who is struck is Abel and one who strikes is Cain. If you call out rudely to someone who has brought no harm to you, you become a Cain.

So it is all very well to say ShinChul is the heir and has been brought up properly but the Principle is the Principle.

This the pastors message I gave in the next newsletter:

William Haines Pastors message

It has been a busy week in unexpected ways. While I was giving a sermon in Hatch End about choosing a leader as our National Leader Mike Balcomb is stepping down, Shinchul Moon, a son of Hyo Jin and a grandson of True Parents, was speaking at the Sunday service in South London. Which of course is why there werent many people in the congregation in north London. Many had gone to pack out the Peace Embassy. But we still had a nice service and pot luck lunch afterwards.

But then in the afternoon all hell broke loose. Lots of WhatsApp and email messages about what had happened in South London. I dont often see things on Zoom or YouTube but realised I had better watch. So Ruth and I watched the speech given by Shinchul. It was very shocking to hear the language he was using and it made my wife feel sick and heavy for several days afterwards. It was of course even more shocking for everyone that was there especially the children. I am not aware of any church that would allow that sort of language in a sacred space. I am not aware of any religious leader who would use this kind of language in a sacred space. Everyone expects a sermon to be uplifting and inspirational. Full of spiritual food even if challenging in some ways. The Word of God should always be challenging. Challenging us to change the way we see the world and how we should be living our lives so that we leave the world a better place.

When giving a sermon it is important to know and understand who one is speaking to. I remember the only time I heard Billy Graham speak. It was at Crystal Palace in 1989 on his last visit. And I heard that before he came to the UK for his final visit he had consulted lots of people so that he could understand the state of the nation and the people he would be speaking to so that he could speak to their heart and awaken their desire to come to Christ. So, he addressed people who were living in a much more secular than when he first came in 1954 when, much to the disapproval of the Anglican hierarchy, he met Queen Elizabeth who invited him to Buckingham Palace. My own parents heard Billy Graham speak in 1960 in Kenya where they were living. I was 3 at the time and cant remember being taken along. They were moved and answered his call to come to Christ. Over 200 million people attended his live events over 58 years of evangelism. Millions became born again Christians. None were disgusted by what he said and decided never to come back again. Which is sadly what happened last Sunday at the Peace Embassy.

The subject of Shinchuls brief talk was ESGD and its leaders who he named. Two of them Patrick and Yebuny Hanna are members of our community and have dedicated their lives to looking after the second generation in the UK and Europe. They are an exemplary family living in a three-generation household. And yet he openly criticised them and ESGD. That too was very shocking. Shinchul has been in Europe for nearly a year and during this time never tried to contact them and didnt attend any of the many ESGD workshops and programs that go on in several countries. Instead it appears he just formed his view of them based on hearsay and rumours from people who for whatever reason are hostile to ESGD. If one hears about a problem and wants to try to solve it, it is important to find out what is going on. This means listening to both sides so as to try to mediate. Otherwise it is better to remain silent and not to intervene and interfere and make things worse.

For many years there have been conversations among people in our European community about ESGD. IMO the problems have not been solved because of an unwillingness on both sides to admit they each made mistakes and to apologise. But at least the conversation has been going on and the overwhelming majority of the young people have not taken one side or the other and do not wish to be pushed into doing so.

So Shinchuls analysis that it was about how Chambumo-Ron was received was not helpful but was very revealing about his way of thinking. In his apology Shinchul wrote, what I wanted to talk about was to raise the question about where our brothers and sisters in European Second Generation Development see themselves going if they cannot come to terms with Chambumo-Ron. And yet, since the new theology was revealed we have been encouraged to have a discourse about it. According to the dictionary a discourse is a verbal interchange of ideas and a formal and orderly and usually extended expression of thought on a subject. So, we have been encouraged to discuss, analyse and come to our own conclusion about the lectures. The content in the presentations has changed with each edition that is published. If one agrees with one version what happens if the next version is different? Should one/can one disagree? If one analyses the contents one might find it is illogical or doesnt make sense or contradicts the Principle as expressed in our scripture. What should one do? Should one behave as loyal communists used to do and change ones opinion so that it is always aligned with the latest opinion of the communist party leadership? Then Shinchul wrote:

Therefore if they [ESGD] as a community cannot accept this [Chambumo-Ron], it is difficult to move forward together, because in the end we are a faith based community and if they cannot accept this whether we like it or not we cannot coexist.

This is a fascinating statement. It means that people who cannot agree about a doctrine cannot co-exist. This raises the question of whether or not it possible for Jews, Christians and Muslims to co-exist. Whether or not it is possible for Christians with different beliefs to co-exist. After the death and resurrection of Jesus Christians came to believe different things about Jesus and who he was. Which was natural but some thought that was more important than anything else and so argued and accused each other. And sometimes fought each other. Then the Emperor Constantine made all the bishops from the empire to come together in Nicaea and agree about what they all believed in. They produced the Nicene Creed and no one could call themselves a Christian unless they accepted it. And anyone who didnt accept it was excommunicated and expelled from the Empire. Later they might be put to death. This view that what one believed about Jesus was more important than believing in and loving Jesus created walls between Christians and in the end led to the formation of 400+ different denominations, each thinking it was right and all the others were wrong. Thinking that they would go to heaven and everyone else to hell.

It is significant Shinchul gave his speech on the 1700th anniversary of the Nicene Creed. Any Christian who did not sign up to it was expelled from the Roman Empire. After that with Christianity becoming the official religion of the Roman Empire Europe descended into stagnation for 1000 years. It was the Nicene Creed that made the wall because it prevented people from talking freely about what they thought. People were afraid of saying what they thought in case they were excommunicated and punished. The Nestorian Church based in Bagdad which was then geographically the largest church stretching to China and Mongolia was expelled. It looks like we are following in the same footsteps. It is only within the last 100 years that Christians have begun to go beyond this with the ecumenical movement.

When Ruth and I went to my wifes local church to have a wedding after the blessing in 1982 the pastor and his elders asked us what we believed in. I said I believed in Jesus. They asked me what I believed about Jesus. Did I accept the Nicene Creed? I said no. I dont believe Jesus is God or the Only Begotten Son of God. I asked them. What is more important? To believe in, trust and love Jesus or to believe certain things about Jesus? What would one be asked by St Peter at the Pearly Gate. As sincere people of faith they had to admit believing in Jesus is more important than what one believes about Jesus.

A faith based community is not one where everyone believes the same thing. Faith is not about believing a certain doctrine. It is about loyalty and love. A faithful person loves and is loyal to God, their spouse, their friends and their nation. They dont break up because of a difference of beliefs. Faith does not mean certainty. It means the courage to live with uncertainty. It does not mean having the answers, it means having the courage to ask the questions and not let go of God, as He does not let go of us. It means realising that God creates divine justice but only we, acting in accord with His word, can create human justice and our very existence means that this is what God wants us to do. And justice does not mean condemning people because they do not agree with us and our version of the truth

Shinchul thanked us for our understanding. The problem is his lack of understanding.

True Father always taught again and again that unity comes through LOVE not common beliefs or doctrines. That is why he initiated so many interfaith projects and why so many of the leaders of many religious communities participated and made friends with each other. Friendship is based on love not common doctrines. So, while he may not be able to co-exist we can.

The late Chief Rabbi Jonathan Sacks wrote: The most important forms of leadership come not with position, title or robes of office, not with prestige and power, but with the willingness to work with others to achieve what we cannot do alone; to speak, to listen, to teach, to learn, to treat other peoples views with respect even if they disagree with us, to explain patiently and cogently why we believe what we believe and do what we do; to encourage others, praise their best endeavours and challenge them to do better still. Always choose influence rather than power. It helps change people into people who can change the world.

On Monday I am going to Lambeth Palace, the official residence of the Archbishop of Canterbury, to attend a meeting of the Council of Christians and Jews to commemorate the 80th Holocaust Memorial Day. It will be attended by the leaders of all the different Christian and Jewish groups in the UK. To try to make up for 1700 years of anti-Semitism they are trying to co-exist despite having different beliefs. To base their relationship on friendship instead. God called Abraham his friend. God called Moses his friend. And Jesus called his disciples his friends. Can one imagine a greater honour than to be called the friend of God? Maybe we could make love and friendship the basis of our own community.

As to why I responded the way I did this is why:

When one does something wrong one should apologise to the person one has wronged. ShinChul should have phoned them up or written an apology. That is the traditional Jewish, Christian and Muslim understanding. Indemnity is doing whatever needs to be done to restore things to the way they were before things went wrong. BTW he also claimed he contacted Patrick and Yebuny. The first they heard of that was when they read it.

This is the Biblical view:

Do not hate your brother in your heart. Reprove [or reason with] your neighbour frankly so you will not bear sin because of him. Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against anyone among your people, but love your neighbour as yourself. I am the Lord. Leviticus 19: 17-18

The meaning of this is two fold:

Someone, you believe, has done you harm. In such a case do not remain in a state of silent resentment. Do not give way to hate, do not bear a grudge, and do not take revenge. Instead, correct him, reason with him, tell him what you believe he has done and how you feel it has harmed you. He may apologise and seek to make amends. Even if he does not, at least you have made your feelings known to him. That in itself is cathartic. It will help you to avoid nursing a grievance.

And that is what Jesus taught too:

If your brother sins against you rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him. Luke 17:3

That is what Patrick and Yebuny did when they wrote that piece which I expect you read about the shock their whole family felt when they heard ShinChul speaking. And you may have noticed they didnt feel resentment as is clear from the letter they wrote a few days after what happened. They are just following the teaching of Moses, Jesus and True Father.

The other meaning of the passage refers to someone you see acting wrongly, committing a sin or a crime. You may not be the victim. You may be just an observer. The command tells us not to be content with passing a negative judgment on his or her behaviour (i.e. with hating him in your heart). You must get involved. You should approach him, pointing out in as gentle and constructive a way as you can, that what he is doing is against the law, civil or moral. If you stay silent and do nothing, you will become complicit in his guilt (i.e. bear sin because of him) because you saw him do wrong and you did nothing to protest.

This is what I was doing and that is restoration. I am the older brother Cain. As older brother I should protect my younger brother and sister from being bullied. As pastor I was standing up for the members of my community. As ShinChuls older brother I was correcting him as is my responsibility. Not to have done so would be a sin of omission. To have let him get away with it means he would have thought it was acceptable for him to behave in such a way. Again, no doubt a view which causes cognitive dissonance.

As far as an apology being personal that is just good manners. Of course, doing it publicly in the way ShinChul did it was very touching but it was clear he was still trying to sort it all out.

The thing about a personal apology is it is personal and usually leads to a personal response, reconciliation and the beginning of intimate communication and a relationship. I think a private letter would be a good start. The ball will then be in their court. I imagine and hope Patrick and Yebuny would reply. And hopefully they will have a friendly meeting next time he comes to Britain. It would be good if he went to visit them and their families - they live together as 3 generations with both Patrick and Yebunys parents and siblings living close by. He should apologise to Patrick and Yebuny and in good Korean style bow down to their parents. Jacob and Esau style is the way to go. That is restoration. Confession, apology (repentance), forgiveness and reconciliation.

Have a good week,

William
